Large Rock falls scare Calheta
![]()
The landslide from the hillside overlooking the promenade of Calheta touched part of the recreation port yesterday morning, causing havoc on the road and effected part of the maritime infrastructure. A trader from the area was touched whilst trying to walk through the affected artery towards a commercial area: he escaped with a superficial wound on his back. The wire mesh protection made of steel was unable to halt the slide of tons of stones.
The collapse confirms the concern of the regional government who recently awarded the constructions works to stabilise this particular slope. The consolidation of the escarpment is justified due to the fact that, over the years and as a result of natural progression and erosion have been reported when small rock falls and been occurring. The regional secretary of Infrastructure, based on a geological and geotechnical study considered this justification for a project aiming to protect and consolidate the areas overlooking the harbour. This concern also touches not only residents and traders from the town but also it is a necessary security measure since it is a road with a high level of traffic both domestic and foreign tourists.

Regional Government accepts Agreement provided that Banana Producers are Compensated
The Regional Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources, Manuel Antonio Correia, argued today that the Regional Government supports the new guidelines for the banana trade since the proposal of the Outermost Regions (ORs) is welcomed by Brussels.
The European Parliament adopted on Thursday in Brussels to conclude an agreement on the banana trade between the EU and Latin American countries, including Brazil, which ends a dispute of 16 years.
The Assembly requested, however, the European Commission present an evaluation of the impact of this agreement for the outermost regions, as Madeira, and enhance support for European producers.
Manuel Antonio Correia said that this proposal is "an indication and that the final decision rests with the European Commission" who is expected to accept the recommendation of the MEPs.
"The position of the Government is against opening up the market because it harms the producers of Madeira, but given the inevitability of globalisation, respect for market rules and international agreements, Madeira, subordinating the position of the OR, argue that producers should be compensated for the loss of competitiveness and efficiency."
Since 2008 Madeira has received a fixed financial envelope of EUR 8 million year to compensate for the loss of competitiveness as a result of other trade agreements already concluded and wants it enhanced for the same reasons.
On the table is a proposal under negotiation in the OR to the value of a 30 million compensation deal with this new agreement which covers the Azores, the Canary Islands and French overseas departments, under which it will mean Madeira receiving 700 000 EUR leaving the region to benefit from compensation payments in annual value of 8.7 million.
Financial “mishaps” hamper the works on the North Pier
The vice president of the Regional Government, Joao Cunha e Silva, this morning visited the ongoing works of north pier of the port of Funchal. On this occasion he said that “financial setbacks” had hindered the progress of work but envisaged the conclusion of them before the end of his term in office, which runs until late September, early October. Cunha e Silva said he had made "enormous effort" to get started on this "emblematic" in Funchal, which will feature a car park with approximately 500 spaces and commercial spaces. Avenida Sá Carneiro will also have four tracks. The governor believes that this infrastructure will be a success, since there are already many private individuals looking for information on the granting of spaces.
