Secretary of State Clinton put the U.S. firmly on the side of the Egyptian protesters today and dressed down long-time ally President Hosni Mubarak on the use of force against demonstrations.
“We call on the Egyptian government to do everything in its power to restrain the security forces,” Clinton said at the State Department.
“We are deeply concerned about the use of violence” by the police and the army that turned the Cairo streets into battlegrounds, Clinton said.
“The Egyptian government needs to engage immediately with the Egyptian people” on the reforms demanded by the protesters, Clinton said.
As a first step, Clinton called on the government to lift the restrictions that have cut off the Internet access and other forms of communication.
